Smart Lighting Systems
Smart lighting is the most popular and impactful smart home upgrade. HMG Electrical installs complete smart lighting systems that let you control every light in your home from your phone, voice, or automated schedules:
- Lutron Caseta & RadioRA 3: The industry gold standard for smart lighting. Lutron’s proprietary ClearConnect RF technology provides rock-solid reliability with no WiFi dependency. We install Caseta dimmers, switches, Pico remotes, and the Smart Bridge for full home control. Works with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and Sonos.
- Whole-Home Dimming: Install smart dimmers in every room for one-touch scene control. Set “Morning,” “Entertaining,” “Movie Night,” and “Goodnight” scenes that adjust all lights simultaneously.
- Occupancy & Vacancy Sensors: Lights that turn on when you enter a room and off when you leave — saving energy automatically. Perfect for bathrooms, closets, garages, and laundry rooms.
- Outdoor Smart Lighting: Automated landscape, security, and patio lighting with scheduling, sunrise/sunset automation, and remote control from anywhere.
Smart Climate & Comfort Control
South Florida’s heat makes smart climate control a game-changer for comfort and energy savings:
- Smart Thermostat Installation: We install and wire Nest, Ecobee, and Honeywell Home smart thermostats with proper C-wire connections. Smart thermostats learn your schedule and adjust automatically, saving the average South Florida homeowner $150-$300 per year on cooling costs.
- Motorized Shade & Blind Control: Automated window shades that lower during peak sun hours reduce your AC load significantly. We install the electrical outlets, hardwired connections, and smart controllers for Lutron Serena, Hunter Douglas PowerView, and other motorized shade systems.
- Smart Ceiling Fan Control: WiFi-enabled ceiling fan controllers let you adjust fan speed and direction from your phone or voice assistant, complementing your AC system for better circulation and energy efficiency.
- Zoned Climate Control: Smart vent systems and multi-zone thermostats that direct cooling where you need it, when you need it — no more cooling empty rooms.
Whole-Home Audio & Entertainment Wiring
HMG Electrical provides the electrical infrastructure for seamless whole-home entertainment:
- In-Wall & In-Ceiling Speaker Wiring: Pre-wire or retrofit speaker wire for Sonos, Bose, Klipsch, and other whole-home audio systems. We run speaker wire through walls and ceilings with minimal disruption.
- TV Mounting & Power: Professional TV mounting with in-wall power and HDMI/Ethernet runs for a clean, wire-free installation. We install recessed power outlets and cable management for any TV size.
- Dedicated Home Theater Circuits: Proper electrical circuits for projectors, amplifiers, subwoofers, and AV equipment. We install dedicated 20-amp circuits to prevent interference and ensure clean power delivery.
- Network Infrastructure: CAT6/CAT6A Ethernet wiring for reliable, fast connectivity. WiFi access point placement and power for whole-home mesh networks (Ubiquiti, Eero, etc.).
Smart Home Electrical Infrastructure
The foundation of any reliable smart home is proper electrical infrastructure. HMG Electrical installs the behind-the-scenes wiring and power that makes everything work:
- Dedicated Smart Home Circuits: Smart hubs, mesh WiFi systems, security panels, and NVR/DVR systems need clean, reliable power on dedicated circuits with battery backup capability.
- USB Outlet Installation: Replace standard outlets with USB-A and USB-C combination outlets for convenient device charging throughout your home.
- Outdoor Outlet Installation: Weatherproof GFCI outlets for security cameras, smart doorbells, landscape lighting controllers, and outdoor entertainment equipment.
- Structured Wiring Panel: A central wiring hub that organizes all your network, audio, and low-voltage cabling in one accessible location.
Smart Security & Safety Systems
HMG Electrical installs the electrical components for comprehensive smart security systems:
- Smart Doorbell Installation: Ring, Nest, and Arlo video doorbells with proper transformer upgrades (many older homes have 10VA transformers that are insufficient for video doorbells — we upgrade to 24VA/30VA transformers).
- Security Camera Power: Hardwired PoE (Power over Ethernet) camera installations for superior reliability over WiFi cameras. We run CAT6 cable and install PoE switches for professional-grade systems.
- Smart Lock Power: Electrical modifications for smart lock installations, including strike plate wiring for electric strike locks on gates and commercial doors.
- Smoke & CO Detector Upgrades: Hardwired, interconnected smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors that send alerts to your phone.
Frequently Asked Questions About Smart Home Installation
How much does a smart home installation cost?
Smart home costs vary widely based on scope. A basic smart lighting upgrade (10-15 switches/dimmers with hub) typically runs $1,500-$3,500 installed. A comprehensive system with lighting, thermostats, shades, and audio can range from $5,000-$15,000+. We provide detailed proposals broken down by component so you can prioritize.
Can you add smart home features to an older home?
Absolutely. Most smart home upgrades can be retrofitted into any home. Smart switches replace standard switches with no new wiring. For features needing new wiring (speakers, cameras, Ethernet), we run cables through attic and walls with minimal disruption. We specialize in retrofitting older South Florida homes.
Which smart home platform do you recommend?
For lighting, we strongly recommend Lutron Caseta — the most reliable smart lighting system available that works with all major platforms. For overall home automation, Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home all work well. The best choice depends on your existing ecosystem.
Do smart home devices work during power outages?
WiFi-dependent smart devices will not work during a power outage unless you have battery backup (UPS) on your router and smart hub. This is why we recommend a whole-home standby generator or at minimum a UPS on your network equipment. We install dedicated circuits with UPS protection for critical smart home infrastructure.
